Ask your administrator if you think this is wrong. ====== John Graham (1782-1855) ====== John Graham (J was born 1.Oct.1782 in Pennslyvania to parents James Graham and Mary Buffington. ((JG's birthdate is recorded in a preserved Bible belonging to Mary Buffington. Pennsylvania is shown as his birthplace in an 1850 U.S. Census record.)) He died on 26.July.1855 and is buried in Grahamsville Cemetery in Jackson, OH. ((Grahamsville Cemetery has a gravestone for JG which shows his dates of birth and death.)) John probably came from Pennslyvania to Ohio along with his parents sometime before 1800. ((The 1850 census record shows Pennslyvania as the birthplace of his sister Elizabeth, born in 1797. Tax records show his father James Graham as a resident of Middletown, Washington, OH in 1800.)) He married Catherine Rickabaugh on 2.Jan.1810 in Scioto, Jackson, OH. ((The Ancestry.com website has a digital image of the original marriage record.)) During the war of 1812, he served in the Ohio Militia under Capt. William Mumm. Following this, he lived in Franklin Township, Jackson County, OH and may have been involved in the local enterprise of making salt as well as being a farmer. ((This is shown by U.S. War of 1812 Pension Application Files, which can be found on Ancestry.com. John Graham's pension number was WO 3132.)) In 1817 John Graham became the first official settler in Scioto Township, Jackson County, OH, having gained title from the Government Land office for "the southeast half of the southwest quarter of section 35). He was soon joined by other settlers; by 1820 Scioto Township had approximately 60 households, including that of JG's father James Graham. ((This information was derived by examining a digital copy of the 1820 U.S. Census record for Scioto Township, Jackson County, OH.)) During the 1830s, three of his sons (John, Felix, Jehiel) worked at the Clinton Furnace in nearby Scioto County. Lesley, the Clinton Furnace was built in 1832 in Vernon Township, Scioto County, OH. Ir was one of many iron-producing furnaces in the Hanging Rock Iron Region of southern Ohio.
