====== George Phillip Hiteshew (1756-?) ====== George (Jürg) Phillip Heitshew, son of Johann Nicolaus Heidshcu and Anna Sybilla, was born on 23.Jun.1756 and baptized in the Alsace church on 27.Jun.1756. The sponsors at his baptism were Jürg Phillip Heidschu and Eva Elisabeth Geredtin. It seems likely Johann Nicolaus named his young son after his uncle Jürg Phillip and asked that uncle to be a baptismal sponsor. The other sponsor, Eva Elisabeth Geredtin, may have been the sister of Johann Nicolaus, with Geredtin being her married surname. ((See the article Schumacher Register for details on how the surnames of married and unmarried women were recorded.)) ==== Early Life ==== Goerge Phillip (GP) grew up in a German-American community with origins in the Palatine Migration. Most members of that community were engaged in farming, and GP's father Johann Nicolaus Hiteshew, who came own 100 acres of land, was almost certainly a farmer. GP likely had schooling of some kind, in keeping with Lutheran values of literacy and education for all. (("The early Lutheran church documents promoted reading and the importance of education. Early reformers emphasized the use literacy of the masses such that they were able to read the Bible, as well as strengths in mathematics and literacy. Lutheran Church teachings on the standards for the education of students were published in 1529, emphasizing the study of grammar, definitions and the Latin language." quoted from Wikipedia article Protestantsim in Germany.)) ==== Marriage, Work and Family ==== The story of GP told here is based on a combination of historical records and family trees, though the accuracy of the family trees is uncertain. A baptism record indicates that GP's parents had moved to Frederick County, MD by 1773, ((Maryland Births and Christenings: Johannes Heitschuh, son of Nicolas Heitschuh and Anna Sibylla, baptism 10.Jun.1773, Evangelical Lutheran of Middletown, Frederick, Maryland. SOURCE: Ancestry.com. Maryland, U.S., Births and Christenings Index, 1662-1911 [database online]. Provo UT, USA:Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2011.)) and it is likely that GP and his brother J. Jacob moved there as well. Tax records for Berks County, PA in 1767 include no one listed with the surname Hiteshew (or variant). ((Pennsylvania tax records for 1767 accessed via Internet Archive.)) Federal Census records for 1790-1820 for Frederick County, Maryland include a Phillip (or P) Hiteshew and a Jacob (or J) Hiteshow, both in the correct age range to be GP and his brother J. Jacob. ((The 1800 Federal Census was conducted in August of that year. Since GP was born in June of 1756, his age at this time would have been 44.)) While the census records for 1790 and 1810 are not broken down by district within the county, those for 1800 and 1820 show George and Jacob in the Taney district. All this suggests that GP and his brother J. Jacob purchased land in or near Taneytown, Maryland and moved there sometime before 1790. The census records for 1790-1820 indicate a marriage prior to 1790 either to a woman who was 10+ younger or to a first wife who died before 1810 and was followed by a second younger wife. As explained elsewhere, Eve Elizabeth Geredtin was a sponsor at the birth of GP and thus unlikely to be the name of GP's wife. There may be a marriage record for GP somewhere in church records, and possibly baptism records for his children as well. If such records exist, finding them would be helpful. Census records from before 1850 include only names for head of household, so linking them to specific people is difficult. There are two records for 1810 that could be for GP; one is for P Hitechew and the other is for P Highshoe. The record for P Highshoe is more consistent with the 1800 and 1820 records for Phillip Hiteshew in Taney, so I assume the record for P Hitechew is for another person (possibly Peter Hiteshew, son of GP's brother J. Jacob). ==== Revolutionary War ==== I have looked through lists of Revolutionary War soldier from Berks County, PA and from Maryland. ((History of Berks County, Pennsylvania, in the Revolution, from 1774 to 1783 accessed via Internet Archive.\\ See also external website http://www.pagenweb.org/~berks/oldberkssite/Military/RevolutionaryWar/berksjn1.html.)) There is no indication that GP or any of his relatives served in the military during the Revolutionary War. ===== Family Details ===== ==== George Phillip Hiteshew + Unknown ===== ---(Probably incomplete)--- * Jacob Hiteshew (1780-1858) * Elizabeth Hiteshew (1787-1850) * George Hiteshew (1788-1854) * Abraham? * Daniel Hiteshew (1804-1853) * Catherine? ---- ==== Footnotes ==== ++++ Click to Open/Close | ~~REFNOTES~~ ++++
