This is a three volume work that expands upon and updates a one volume work first published by Howe in 1847. As explained in the Wikipedia article Historical Collections of Ohio, the State of Ohio acquired the copyright and printing plates for this work and subsequently issued a number of reprints. The Wikipedia articles has links to online editions provided by Google Books. Some versions of this work also can be viewed via Archive.org.

This book contains some good information, including material from personal memoirs, but the online version does support navigation by chapter, and the book itself has no table of contents. Other online sources (find via WorldCat) allow navigation to individual pages, but also provide no chapter titles or chapter navigation. However, the Google Books version can be searched using keywords, and that can be helpful for finding information on specific topics.

Maryland

History of Frederick County

Williams, T. J. C. & McKinsey, F. (1910). History of Frederick County, Maryland: from the earliest settlements to the beginning of the war between the states. Frederick, MD: L. R. Titsworth & co.

  • This work, originally published in two volumes, is now in the public domain can can accessed in digital form via the Hathi Trust Digital Library:
  • Includes useful information on the early history of Frederick County. While I have only skimmed this, it seems to confirm that German-speaking immigrants and their descendants were a significant presence.

The biographical sketch of Philip Hiteshew (son of Daniel) in the above work appears to have been pretty much copied from an earlier work:

Chapman Publishing Company (1898) Portrait and biographical record of the Sixth congressional district, Maryland. New York: Chapman Publishing Co.
This work can be accessed in digital form via the Internet Archive

(For biographical sketch of Philip L. Hiteshew, see pp. 329-331.)

Schumacher Register

The Schumacher Register refers to a notebook kept by Lutheran pastor Daniel Schumacher. It included records of baptisms from to 1754-1774 and was written in German. It was translated in 1967 by Frederick B. Weiser, and this translation has been made available for viewing by Ancestry.com as part of an online database:

Ancestry.com, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, U.S., Church and Town Records, 1669-2013 [database on-line]. Lehi, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2011. Source Citation: Historical Society of Pennsylvania; Philadephia, Pennsylvania; Historic Pennsylvania Church and Town Records.
The way information from this database is presented on Ancestry.com obscures can lead to misinterpretation. To avoid this, it is helpful to know something about the structure of the original Schumacher Register.
