Altman

The focal ancestor for this wiki's Altman line is David Daniel Altman, born in Pennsylvania in 1790.

In older records for the Altman line, the surname may be spelled Altmann, Aultmann, or Aultman. It was common among early German-speaking immigrants for a person to be known by what we call their middle name, with the first name being given as namesake for an older family member or other respected person. However, cultural adaptation may have led to first and middle names being reversed. Over time, the ordering of names became standardized and the name a person would be known by became a choice, as it is today.

David appears to be descended from Jacob Altman and Anna Maria Isenmann who arrived in Pennsylvania with their family, including son Johann Wilhelm, born in 1749. Jacob and Anna Maria probably came from a region that included Bayern, Germany and Alsace, France.

Johann Wilhelm married Maria Barbara Scholl, was probably also descended from German-speaking immigrants. Johann Wilhelm acquired land and established a farm in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, PA. It is believe that Johann Wilhelm was a veteran of the Revolutionary War.

The children of Johann Wilhem and Barbara Maria included William John Altman, who was born 26.Sep.1760 in Berks County, PA.

Records suggest that William John served in the Continental Line during the Revolutionary War, probably in a company of frontier rangers. He also later served in the War of 1812 as a musician in Captain Isaac Warner's company from Columbiana County, OH. While still living in Westmoreland County (PA), it seems likely that William John married Catherine Clippinger/Cleppinger/Kleppinger, but there is little confirmed information about Willam John's wife other than that her name was Catharine/Catherine. After beginning a family, William John and Catherine subsequently to Columbiana County, OH, where William John acquired land, possibly with the help of a land bounty for his military service.

The children of William John and Catharine included David Daniel Altman, who was born 28.Feb.1790 in Hempfield, Westmoreland, PA.

During the war of 1812, David Daniel served as a private in the Ohio Militia (2nd regiment under Colonel John Hindman, company of Captain Martin Sitler). In 1818, David Daniel married Margaret Rummell, who was born 16.Dec.1789 in Washington, Franklin, PA. The marriage took place in Trumbull County, OH, which was probably the home of Margaret's family at the time. David and Margaret appear to have lived in Columbiana and Meigs counties before moving to a farm in Morgan Township, Scioto County, OH sometime before 1859.

The parents of Margaret (aka Margaretha) were Christian Rummell and Elizabeth Sell. Both were born in Lancaster County, PA and likely descended from German-speaking immigrants who were part of the Palatine Migration. Christian and Elizabeth moved from Pennsylvania to Trumbull County, Ohio. They may have acquired property there with the help of or through inheritance from Margaret's father, Samuel, who is shown by a will and probate records to have been living in that county at the time of his death ~1826.

The children of David Daniel and Margaret include Solomon Altman, born in Ohio in 1831. Solomon married first Mary Throckmorton and second Narcissus Throckmorton.
