Richard "Dick" Marshall (1859-1893)

Richard Marshall was born c.1859 in Stokes, Madison, OH. His parents were

Richard's family left Ohio sometime between 1862 and 1866 and were living in Indiana by the time Richard was seven years old. Richard's sister Hattie was born in Watseka, IL in 1874 and Richard is described in an obituary as having spent his early life in Watseka. While Richard lived at home, his father was engaged in farming and blacksmithing. However, census records suggest that Richard's father did not own land or real property during this period.

On 17.Dec.1888 Richard married Barbara Jane Mote. The marriage took place in Watseka, Iroquois, IL.

No records have been found to provide information about Richard's education, but he may have learned blacksmithing and carpentry skills as a teen. The census record for 1880 shows that Richard, now ~21 years old, is no longer living with his parents, but his exact whereabouts are unknown until he is shown by a city directory to be living in Hyde Park, IL and working as a carpenter. When Richard's parents moved to Nebraska, Richard remained in Illinois. By 1890, Richard was living in Chicago, where he is recorded has having voted during that year.

Richard died at age 34 on 20.Jul.1893 in Chicago, Cook, IL. He was tragically killed by an accidental explosion during a fireworks display at a picnic celebration. His grave is in Oak Hill Cemetery, Watseka, Iroquois, IL.
