Levi Martin McCoy (1824-1890)

Levi Martin McCoy was born 9.Sep.1824 in Hamilton, Jackson, OH. His parents were Michael McCoy and Elizabeth E. Mercer.

Levi's name was probably given in remembrance of his maternal grandparents, Levi Dallas Mercer and Sarah Martin.

On 13.Jul.1848, Levi married Mahala Graham. The marriage took place in Jackson County, OH.

During the Civil War, Levi served as a private in Company I, 172nd Regiment, Ohio Infantry (Union Army).

Levi donated land for the Hamilton Christian Church. This church was established c.1821 by a Rev. Summerbell. It is not known whether Rev. Summerbell and early church members considered themselves part of a larger religious denomination or organization. The church met initially in homes and school houses, then erected a church building in 1871 – perhaps on the land donated by Levi. 1)

Levi died at age 65 in Morgan, Scioto, OH. His grave is in Bear Creek Cemetery, Bear Creek, Scioto, OH.
