Silas H. Rockwell (1819-1898)

This page is in need of contributors to provide further information.

Silas Rockwell was the father of Jonas Rockwell, who married Sarah Ann Marshall (daughter of Richard F. Marwhall).

Silas H. Rockwell was most likely born 25.Mar.1819, probably in Madison, Scioto, OH. 1) Census records and other known documents suggest that his parents were Joseph Rockwell and Mary “Polly” McCray, but no specific records have been found to confirm this. 2) *

On 24.Jan.1839, Silas married Rachel Vernon. The marriage took place in Jackson County, OH.

As reported in the 18.Mar.1876 edition of the Portsmouth Times: “Silas Rockwell of Morgan Township has traded his farm for one in Ross county, and removed thither last week.”

As reported in the 11.Mar.1876 edition of the Portsmouth Times, on July 7 Silas Rockwell and others were fined $10 each and costs on a charge of riot. A charge of malicious destruction of dwelling was dismissed. Perhaps this is somehow connected with the move to Ross county.

Silas died at age 80 on 12.Apr.1898 in Huntington, Ross, OH. His grave is in Seelig Cemetery, Huntington, Ross, OH.

1) There is conflicting information on whether the year of Silas' birth is 1819 or 1818. The most reliable source of known information is probably the FamilySearch website Collection: Ohio Deaths and Burials, 1854-1997. According to this, Silas died on 12.Apr.1898 at age 79, making 1819 his year of birth. A birth year of 1819 is also more consistent with age reported in census records. The Find-a-Grave web page for Silas shows a photo of this gravestone, but some parts of the image are in shadow and cannot be read in the photo. However, the image clearly shows age at death to be 79 years and 18 days.
2) According to census records, there was a Joseph Rockwell residing in Scioto County around the time of Silas' birth. Also, there's a record of a marriage in 1919 in Scioto County between Joseph Rockwell and Mary Bennett. According to family trees found on Ancestry.com, Mary McCray first married Thaddeus Bennett, so the record for her marriage to Joseph shows her as Mary Bennett.
